Time Traveller tops UK box office

The Time Traveller's Wife
Bana stars as the librarian with a rare gene that makes him travel through time

Romantic drama The Time Traveller's Wife has topped the UK and Ireland box office chart in its opening weekend.

The film, based on the best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger and starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, took £1.4m in three days.

Family film Aliens in the Attic made its debut just behind at number two with £1.3m in ticket sales.

Last week's number one, The Ugly Truth starring Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl, fell five places to number six.

Secret agent guinea pig movie G-Force rose one place to three, helped by the summer holiday audience.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince fell one spot to number four, taking its five-week haul to £46.8m.

Despite taking £1.7m in its opening weekend, action GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra could only manage £827,389 in its second at five.

There were two other new releases in the top 10 - teen movie Bandslam starring High School Musical's Vanessa Hudgens at number seven and Milla Jovovich thriller A Perfect Getaway at 10.
