Sir Terry Wogan has spent 27 years hosting the Radio 2 breakfast show

Broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan has been inducted into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame as he prepares to step down as host of Radio 2's breakfast show.

Sir Terry was also awarded the PRS John Peel Outstanding Contribution to Music award at Thursday's ceremony.

"I don't really want to go," said the 71-year-old, who steps down next week after 27 years as a breakfast DJ.

Take That were also recognised at the London event, picking up the Neilson Most Played Artist on UK Radio award.

"Even after all these years, there's nothing like hearing your song coming on the radio and making your kids sit through the whole thing," said singer Gary Barlow as he collected the accolade.

Barlow took to the stage again to present Sir Terry the Peel award, named in honour of the Radio 1 DJ who died in 2004.

'Total legend'

Chris Evans was also on hand at London's Millennium Hotel to pay tribute to the veteran Irish broadcaster whose breakfast slot he inherits next year.

"He's a total legend, the best of the best," said Evans, currently hosting Radio 2's Drivetime show. "I still don't know what you do on your show."

Sir Terry was self-effacing, saying he was "only a broadcaster - I sit in front of a microphone and talk.

"I've been sitting there listening to you extolling my virtues and it's hard to recognise myself," he said.

"You're asking 'what does he do and how does he do it'. I don't know - I've always been able to do it. It's never made me nervous."

Sir Terry signs off next Friday after a total of 27 years spent as Radio 2 breakfast host.

On Monday he will raise Tower Bridge and receive the Freedom of the City of London as he marks his final week as presenter of Wake Up to Wogan.

The Radio Academy is a registered charity dedicated to the encouragement, recognition and promotion of excellence in UK broadcasting and audio production.

The John Peel award is bestowed by the Performing Right Society (PRS), the United Kingdom association of composers, songwriters and music publishers.
