Bruno sees Sacha Baron Cohen reprise his gay fashion reporter character |
Comic film Bruno has entered the UK and Ireland box office chart at number one, taking almost £5m in its first weekend. The movie, starring Sacha Baron Cohen as an outrageous fashion reporter from Austria, knocked Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs off the top spot. But the 3D family animation held its own, taking an impressive £4.75m in its second weekend on release. The only other new entry in the Top 10 was Bollywood film Shortkut, which made its debut in tenth place. Other new releases, like US drama The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and ribald comedy Fired Up, had even more modest openings. Tearjerker My Sister's Keeper, comedy Year One and fantasy sequel Night At The Museum 2 held the lower positions in the countdown. Bruno also outperformed the third Ice Age film at the US box office, where it made more in its opening weekend than Cohen's previous comedy Borat. From 24 July, an alternative version of Bruno will be shown in domestic cinemas which has been deemed more suitable for teenage audiences. The unedited version of the film carries an 18 certificate in the UK and Ireland. Next week's chart is sure to be dominated by the latest Harry Potter film, released in UK cinemas on Wednesday. Starring Daniel Radcliffe as the teenage wizard, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth instalment in the blockbuster franchise.
