Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has triumphed in the North American box office chart, taking $201.2m (£122.3m) in its first five days. The film beat industry expectations, falling just short of the five-day opening record of $203.8m (£123.9m) set by The Dark Knight last year. The movie sequel, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, has received mixed reviews with some critics panning it. Romantic comedy The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock, slipped to number two. Revenge of the Fallen had the biggest opening weekend of the year, surpassing the $85.1m (£51.7m) debut of X-Men Origins: Wolverine in early May. Don Harris from the film's distributor Paramount Pictures said women accounted for 46% of its audience, up from 40% for the first movie released in 2007 - an indication of the franchise's expanding appeal. | US AND CANADA BOX OFFICE 1.
