Da Vinci sequel is UK chart hit

Da Vinci Code follow-up Angels and Demons has winged its way to the top of the UK box office, taking £6.1m in its opening weekend.

The Tom Hanks film took almost twice as much as its nearest rival, sci-fi reboot Star Trek, which took £3.5m in its second week of release.

Animated movie Coraline fell one place to three taking £1.4m in receipts.

X Men Origins: Wolverine also fell one spot to number four bringing its three-week haul to £14.3m.

While Hannah Montana: The Movie added another £1m to its total takings after three weeks on the chart.

There was only one other new entry in the top 10 - action drama Fighting starring Channing Tatum and set in the world of underground street fighting.

Just missing out at number 11 was Charlie Kauffman film Synedoche, New York featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The movie took £123,125 despite only opening in 30 cinemas, giving it an average of £4,104 per cinema.

By comparison, Coraline averaged £3,484 across the 394 cinemas it was screened in.
