Flanimals, the successful series of children's books written by Ricky Gervais, is heading to the big screen in a new 3D animated adventure. Gervais is working on the script, about a strange world filled with imaginary creatures, with The Simpsons movie writer Matt Selman. He will lend his voice to the character of Puddy, who is a cowardly Puddloflaj. Gervais says he is keen to procure the vocal talents of Danny DeVito and Samuel L Jackson for the movie. The British comedy star met Selman at the Golden Globe awards in the US and the pair worked together on The Simpsons' episode Homer Simpson, This Is Your Wife in 2006. Selman went on to co-write the screenplay for The Simpsons movie, released in 2007. ITV had commissioned a television series based on the Flanimals books, slated to air in 2009, but it has now been scrapped. The new film will be co-produced by Universal's animation house Illumination Entertainment.
