Rock icon Bruce Springsteen has announced plans to release a new album in January, just 15 months since his last record, Magic, went to number one.

Working On A Dream was recorded with the E Street Band and features 12 new songs, plus two bonus tracks.

The group recorded the album in Atlanta during breaks in their tour.

Springsteen, who is also due to play the half-time show at next year's Super Bowl, said: "We all had a blast making this record from beginning to end."

"I hope Working On A Dream has caught the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we've ever done," the 59-year-old wrote on his website.

"All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes."

The speed of the album's release may surprise fans - as the rock star is renowned for being something of a perfectionist.

On his breakthrough album, 1975's Born To Run, he recorded a dozen guitar overdubs for the title track alone.
