Kings of Leon headlined Glastonbury and T In The Park this summer

US rock group Kings of Leon have scored a chart double - claiming pole position in the UK's singles and albums charts.

Their fourth album, Only By The Night, is one of the fastest-selling records of the year, with more than 220,000 sales in its first week of release.

The only album to sell more in its first week this year is Coldplay's Viva La Vida, Or Death And All His Friends.

Other new entries in the album rundown come from Pussycat Dolls, Bette Midler, McFly and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour.

But none of them could break the top three, denied by Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad and Duffy's Rockferry, which have become almost permanent chart fixtures.

The Barbadian R&B star is at two after 69 weeks in the album chart, while Duffy, at three, has been listed in the top 40 for 30 weeks.

It drops to number 20 this week as the sales boost provided by the Mamma Mia! film wears off.

Band of brothers

Kings of Leon consists of three brothers, Caleb, Jared and Nathan Followill, and their cousin, Matthew Followill.

Their chart triumph comes after a string of summer festival dates, including headline slots at festivals Glastonbury, T in the Park and Ireland's Oxegen.

Drummer Nathan said: "Basically we got to the point where we realised that we can be known as a band that hit it hard for three records and disappeared, or be a band that was smart enough to realise that not very many bands get to make four records, so let's make the most of this.

"Because honestly, we were horrible house painters and that's what we'd be doing if we weren't doing this!"

The Tennessee rockers' single, Sex On Fire, outsold its nearest rival - Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl - by more than 50% this week.

Girls, the Boots advert-sampling song from Sugababes, was one place below, while country star Faith Hill re-entered the chart at 10 with There You'll Be.

The song, from the movie Pearl Harbor, leapt back into the top 40 after being performed as an audition piece on The X Factor last week.

Amy Connelly, a 19-year-old from Scotland, moved judge Cheryl Cole to tears with her rendition of the ballad, after revealing her mother, Rosemarie, had died when she was just seven years old.

Hill's song originally reached number three in June 2001.

Other new entries in this week's singles chart come from Alicia Keys and Jack White, whose Bond theme Another Way To Die makes its first appearance at 26.

Kings of Leon album track Use Somebody arrives at 29, while Disney Stars the Jonas Brothers are at 30 with Burnin' Up.
