Wall-E beaten back by Mamma Mia!

Musical Mamma Mia! has beaten off competition from newly-released Wall-E to hold on to the number one spot at the UK box office.

The Pixar animation, about a loveable trash compacting robot, took �4.3m in its opening weekend while the Abba musical netted �4.6m.

It means two weeks at the top for stars Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.

Last weekend's number two, Hancock, slipped to three, while Eddie Murphy's Meet Dave made its debut at number six.

Animation Kung Fu Panda, voiced by US actor Jack Black, moved down one place to number four.

Action adventure Journey To The Center Of The Earth, starring Brendan Fraser, moved up two places to number five.

Wanted, which sees Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy as members of a fraternity of assassins, moved to number eight from six.

The latest Indiana Jones instalment, The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, re-entered the top ten at number nine, after nine weeks on release.

Jet Li's fantasy action movie Forbidden Kingdom fell to number ten from five.
