Kanye West says criticism over keeping fans waiting at the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee last week has left him "the most offended I've ever been". Writing on his blog, the rapper said he had been more than an hour-and-a-half late because organisers had not allowed enough time to build his elaborate set. In the entry, peppered with swear words and written in capital letters, he said he was "the maddest I will ever be". West was booed by angry fans who waited well into the early hours to see him. "This Bonnaroo thing is the worst insult I've ever had in my life," the 31-year-old wrote. "This is the most offended I've ever been. This is the maddest I ever will be." He said he was typing so hard he might break his computer. West added that he could accept being labelled as, among other things, "arrogant, conceited, narcissistic", but that critics should "never say I didn't give it my all". 'Kanye sucks' West had been due to perform at 0245 local time on Sunday 15 June but eventually took to the stage at 0425. Angry fans at the festival chanted "Kanye sucks" and pelted the stage with empty glow sticks. Kanye West won two Black Entertainment TV awards this week |
In his blog, he complained that he and his representatives had been "back and forth" with organisers on whether his stage show could be accommodated at the festival. He complained that he had asked that his crew be allowed to start preparing his stage show 24 hours earlier but that this had not been allowed. Instead, he wrote, they "wouldn't allow us to do anything until [previous act] Pearl Jam left the stage - Pearl Jam ended one hour late". West's set depicted him as a space traveller whose ship had crash-landed. West said that, once on stage, he had cut a few songs from his set because he was anxious to perform hit Stronger, which heavily features glow-in-the dark effects, before it started getting light. But, by the time he performed the song, the morning light had begun to show. | It broke my heart that I couldn't give these fans Stronger in its greatest form |
"Anyone who came to the Glow Tour can understand why I wanted people to see it properly," he wrote. "It broke my heart that I couldn't give these fans Stronger in its greatest form." 'No sleep' West had originally been scheduled to appear at 2015 on the Saturday night but had specifically requested the later slot so that it would be darker. The rapper added that "sometimes I go two, three days without sleep working on my performance". | Our world-class event production team strives to accommodate the needs of every performer |
"I have to ice my knees after every show and they hurt when I walk through the airport having an expensive stage cuts my payday in half." A spokesman for the Bonnaroo festival said: "Our world-class event production team strives to accommodate the needs of every performer." Earlier this week, West won two awards at this year's Black Entertainment TV (BET) awards in Los Angeles. He took home the prize for best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration for Good Life, which featured T-Pain.
