The stars of Sex and the City have attended the US premiere of their film in thundery conditions in New York.

"We've got this crazy weather so there is like added electricity in the air," said Kristin Davis, as screaming fans lined the streets around the venue.

"We were all worried about our fans but they are die-hard New Yorkers and they can take anything," the actress added.

Co-star Sarah Jessica Parker said it was "very moving" and "one of the great nights in my professional career".

Another member of the cast, Cynthia Nixon, said it was a relief that she no longer had to keep plot details secret from those around her.

"For so long people have been asking us about the film and what happens," she told Associated Press Television News.

The stars reunited for the premiere in New York, where the film was made

"I am so excited about people actually being able to see it - and being able to come up to me and talk to me about it - rather than asking me about it and me not being able to tell them."

And Kim Cattrall, who plays sex-crazed Samantha, admitted she did not watch the film when it received its world premiere in the UK a fortnight ago.

"I am so happy to be home," she said.

"Tonight I feel like a virgin in the sense that I am seeing it for the first time with an audience."

The film, which follows the highs and lows of four women obsessed with fashion and relationships, is a spin-off from the TV show of the same name, which ran for six series until 2004.

It is now showing in the UK and is released in North America on Friday.
