"We're going to attempt to behave like the gentlemen we dressed up as last week," said singer Alex Turner in reference to their Brit Awards outfits.

Best album went to Klaxons for Myths of the Near Future, while Kate Nash beat Amy Winehouse to win best solo artist.

Muse were presented with the best live band award and US group The Killers took best international act.

The Killers accepted the award in via a bizarre video sketch set in a barber's shop, with former boxer Mike Tyson picking a fight with frontman Brandon Flowers.

The winners were all voted for by NME readers, some of whom were invited to the ceremony at the O2 in Greenwich, south-east London.

The Manic Street Preachers were bestowed with the NME's Godlike Genius honour.

The Welsh band played three tracks including Motorcycle Emptiness and a duet with fellow Welsh singer Cerys Matthews on Your Love Alone Is Not Enough.

Guitarist Nicky Wire paid tribute to fellow band member Richey Edwards, who went missing in 1995, saying they "loved him to bits".

Wire took to the stage holding a copy of the first NME to feature the Manics on the front cover.

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty was voted hero of the year, while US President George W Bush was named villain of the year.

Kate Nash won solo artist of the year Kate Nash at NME

Kelly Osbourne, who co-hosted the Brit Awards last week, livened up a subdued evening before she presented Muse with their award.

The 23-year-old took offence at her introduction by hosts James Corden and Matt Horne, the stars of BBC Three's Gavin and Stacey.

Osbourne hurled abuse at Corden after he described her as "queen of hanging out with the bands".

The Enemy beat the Pigeon Detectives and The Wombats in the best new band category, presented by Rod Stewart's daughter Kimberly, who greeted the crowd by shouting: "Hello Europe!"

The ceremony saw Kate Nash duet with Billy Bragg on the late Kirsty MacColl's New England, while The Cribs sang The Smiths track Panic, accompanied by ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.

Nash, who dates Cribs singer Ryan Jarman, said: "Not that I'm biased or anything but Cribs are actually best live band."

Gallows, Lethal Bizzle and Klaxons also performed at the event.

For the second year running, the Reading and Leeds festivals won best live event, while cult BBC Three comedy The Mighty Boosh took best TV show.

BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe was honoured with best radio show.

Britney Spears's Blackout was voted worst album while The Hoosiers were named worst band.

Arctic Monkeys have notched up 15 NME award nominations since they burst onto the music scene in 2005, walking away with eight awards.
