Lavigne was named best solo artist, while her chart-topping song Girlfriend was voted most addictive track.

Muse also scooped two awards for best UK and Ireland act and best headline act. The ultimate urban prize went to R&B star Rihanna.

British singer Amy Winehouse took the Artist Choice prize - an award chosen by her fellow musicians.

The singer - a last-minute addition to the line-up - sang Back to Black, the title track from her hit album, later in the evening.

In September Winehouse cancelled an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas.

Her win comes just weeks after the 24-year-old was arrested and fined in Bergen, Norway for possession of cannabis.

According to her Norwegian attorney, the singer will contest the fine over errors allegedly made by local police.

Prior to Thursday's ceremony, it had been reported Winehouse would sing at the awards with Pete Doherty.

The story proved untrue, though Doherty - who performed at the event with his band Babyshambles - said a collaboration was on the cards.

"We're not doing anything tonight but we will be doing something in the future," he told reporters.

The singer said he hoped Winehouse would appear on a new song he had written, entitled 1939 Returning.

Doherty, who was handed a suspended jail sentence on Monday over drug and motoring offences, was praised by organisers for his punctuality and professionalism.

'Turnaround'

"It's a whole turnaround in the Babyshambles philosophy," the 28-year-old told reporters on the red carpet.

Canada's Nelly Furtado was up for the best solo artist prize

Rapper Snoop Dogg hosted the event, which also featured live performances from Mika, Lavigne, My Chemical Romance and the Foo Fighters.

On accepting her award for best solo artist Lavigne said: "I'm so happy to be able to stand up here tonight and accept this award.

"It's an honour to have you guys all the way in Europe listening to my music."

Linkin Park won the award for best band of 2007, while German rock band Tokio Hotel took the prize for best international act.
