Tony Blackburn launched BBC Radio 1 on 30 September 1967, and stayed with the station for 17 years. Having been a "pirate" DJ, he became known as the host of Radio 1's breakfast show and Top 40 countdown, as well as for his appearances on TV's Top of the Pops.
After leaving Radio 1, he was a fixture on commercial station Capital Gold, and still broadcasts today on BBC London 94.9.
He gained renewed popularity in 2002 when he won ITV1's jungle-based show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!
