Johnny Hallyday is one of France's most popular rock stars |
French rock star Johnny Hallyday has been told he must wait another six months to find out whether he can become a Belgian citizen. The 63-year-old, whose father was Belgian, applied to change nationality in 2005.
Last year, the singer announced he would move to Switzerland in order to avoid high French taxes.
A Belgian parliamentary committee is concerned that his passport application could also be for tax purposes.
The Belgian Foreigners' Office gave a negative opinion on his application to the naturalisation committee because of the singer's absence of ties with the country.
'More clarity'
Committee chairman Guy Hove said the panel would not make a decision for at least six months.
"There is nothing negative or positive about this, no decision has been made yet," he said.
"We just need more clarity, nothing more," he added.
Hallyday, whose real name is Jean-Philippe Smet, has sold about 100 million albums during a career spanning 40 years.
