Simon Pegg's cop comedy Hot Fuzz has taken more money in its first week than his previous hit Shaun of the Dead took in its entire UK cinema run. Hot Fuzz made �7.1m in its first seven days, overtaking the �6.9m Shaun of the Dead earned at box offices in 2004.
The story of an over-achieving police officer in a sleepy English village, Hot Fuzz reunites actors Pegg and Nick Frost with director Edgar Wright.
The team started out on cult TV comedy Spaced before moving to the big screen.
Shaun of the Dead, their debut film, only cost �4m to make but went on to earn more than �15m at box offices worldwide.
Positive reviews
Dubbed a "rom zom com" for its mixture of romantic comedy and zombies, the film was an affectionate parody of George A Romero's Dawn of the Dead series.
Hot Fuzz, which also stars Timothy Dalton, is the team's take on buddy cop movies such as Lethal Weapon and Bad Boys.
Critics have been positive about the film's mixture of comedy and action - although many reviews have complained about its two-hour running time.
The film is due to be released internationally next month, starting in Spain. It will open in the US on 20 April.
