Big day for Archers' gay couple

Another soap landmark has taken place with the first civil partnership on Radio 4's show The Archers.

Farmer Adam Macy and chef Ian Craig tied the knot at a local stately home in Thursday's episode.

Adam's stepfather Brian Aldridge, who had threatened not to attend, overcame his objections and gave his blessing.

The long-running show has challenged its cosy image with a series of spicy stories, most recently where sedate Ruth Archer considered an affair.

Ian (Stephen Kennedy) has already faced the painful ordeal of revealing to his father and brothers that he is gay.

As with the affair storyline, the wedding has divided listeners and angered some religious campaigners.

But the show's producers said The Archers had a long history of dealing with challenging and topical issues.

The Archers is the world's longest-running soap opera on the radio and has been broadcast on weekdays since January 1951.
