Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett says she is putting her film career on hold to become artistic director of an Australian theatre company. Blanchett will take up her post at the Sydney Theatre Company in January with her playwright husband, Andrew Upton.
"It's an absolutely firm commitment, and it is not one that Andrew nor myself have made lightly," she said.
The actress says she and her husband plan to take three months off a year to work on other projects.
'Most exciting'
"Sometimes I may take that up, sometimes I may not, but my primary responsibility is to co-manage and lead this company whilst also maintaining my own engagement as an artist," she said.
The 37-year-old, whose portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator won her the Oscar for best supporting actress in 2005, called the appointment "the most exciting thing that has ever happened".
The star added that if any offers were good enough to lure her away from it, she would seriously consider them.
One of Blanchett's first major acting roles was for the Sydney Theatre Company 13 years ago when she co-starred in a production of Oleanna.
The mother of two is due to direct her first production for the company, A Kind of Alaska, later this month.
