�3m to help museums and galleries

Museums and galleries will benefit from a proposed �3m investment from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help boost cultural skills and research.

Concerns expressed over the state of some museums' by directors of the sector helped make the decision.

It is thought the fund will help about 20 projects around the UK.

Culture secretary Tessa Jowell said: "It will help them develop dynamic collections and maintain their reputation for excellence."

She added: "Important artworks and artefacts will be conserved for local communities and the nation as a whole."

Detailed proposals

Grants from �50,000 to �200,000 will be available and it is hoped the scheme will be launched in April 2007.

Registered museums and galleries can apply but must submit details proposals. The Heritage Lottery Fund has also specified applications must include plans to develop collections within a chosen field.

Carole Souter, director of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: "Collections and collecting are fundamental to the future of our museums and galleries.

"We want to help museums continue to be relevant to their communities and investment will really help make that happen."
