English museums land major grants

The British Museum has received �100,000
The British Museum and Oxford's Ashmolean Museum are among 43 English museums and galleries to benefit from grants totalling �4m.

It is the fifth year of money being allocated under a funding partnership between the government and the Wolfson Foundation charity.

The money will be spent on improving displays, public spaces and access.

National Museums Liverpool and the Bowes Museum in County Durham are the biggest winners with �300,000 each.

Visitor experience

The British Museum in London has been awarded �100,000 to improve its major exhibition, while the Ashmolean Museum will spend its �100,000 on making an entrance hall.

Others to benefit include projects in Birmingham, Bradford, Coventry, Hull, London and Plymouth.

The scheme has awarded a total of �16m to institutions around the country since it was set up in 2002.

Culture Minister David Lammy said: "From Carlisle to Kings Lynn, museums and galleries will be building new exhibition spaces, renovating galleries, restoring exhibits and improving the visitor experience."

The projects receiving the biggest grants include:

  • Birmingham City Museums and Art Gallery - �200,000 for Aston Hall and Park

  • Bradford Museums - �140,000 for CONNECT: People, Place and Imagination

  • Hull Museums and Art Gallery - �130,000 for Wilberforce Phase 2 - Public Access to Hull's hidden treasures

  • National Gallery, London - �120,000 for renovation of the 19th Century galleries

  • Plymouth City Museums and Galleries - �120,000 for environmental and display improvements

    Dr Victoria Harrison, executive secretary of the Wolfson Foundation, said: "The Trustees of the Wolfson Foundation were pleased to see that the DCMS/Wolfson Fund attracted a record number of bids this year.

    "It is a sign that the fund is being well recognised as a means of assisting museums and galleries to improve their facilities."
