The Miami Vice film has knocked the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel off the top of the North American box office chart, according to studio estimates. The Michael Mann thriller earned $25.2m (�13.5m) in its first three days, said its distributor Universal Pictures.
That was around $5m (�2.7m) more than Johnny Depp's film earned in the US and Canada in its fourth weekend.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dead Man's Chest has now made more than $300m (�161m) outside North America.
Teen comedy John Tucker Must Die exceeded expectations by opening in third place at the US box office with a $14.1m (�7.5m) tally.
Disappointing
But animated feature The Ant Bully underperformed, entering the chart at five with disappointing weekend takings of $8.2m (�4.4m).
Despite featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage and Julia Roberts, the Warner Bros movie made less in its first week than rival cartoon Monster House made in its second.
With its worldwide total currently standing at $663.9m (�356.2m), Dead Man's Chest has now passed the original Pirates of the Caribbean's overall takings of $655m (�351.5m).
The film set an opening weekend record at the North American box office by taking $132m (�71m) in its first three days.
Miami Vice, based on the 1980s television series, stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. It has met with a mixed response from film critics.
