The Sun claimed the photos were taken in the Babyshambles singer's kitchen within the past five weeks.

A police spokeswoman said: "Officers from the Specialist Crime Directorate are investigating drug allegations made in today's Sun newspaper."

Doherty is on bail after being arrested over alleged drug possession last week.

On 20 April, the rock star was arrested on suspicion of possessing class A drugs with the intent to supply and was bailed the following day.

Rehabilitation

That arrest came three hours after he faced separate drug possession charges in court.

Mr Doherty was put on a two-year supervision order and given 18 months in drug rehabilitation.

The judge said he was showing "significant signs of compliance and effort" in his recovery.

But he was warned he could be sent to prison if he breaks the supervision order.
