Broadway boost as spending rises
Spamalot
Spamalot has been one of Broadway's biggest recent hits
Hit productions such as Monty Python's Spamalot and Doubt helped push Broadway spending to its highest point since 11 September 2001, according to a report.

Broadway generated $4.8bn (2.7bn) for the New York economy between June 2004 and June 2005, the League of American Theatres and Producers has said.

As well as ticket sales, that amount includes money spent on staging shows.

It also takes into account visitors' related spending, such as hotels and restaurants.

The $4.8bn figure was up 4% from the 2003 figure, taking inflation into account, according to the league.

Some 45,000 full time jobs now depend on New York's theatres, up from 36,000 two years ago, the report said.

The figures come three months after the league reported that fans spent a record $825m on tickets in 2005.
