Profits are down across the board on Broadway |
Audiences on Broadway have fallen as New York's new theatre season gets under way, according to a report. Gross takings dropped 6.5% to $14.7m (8.1m) during the first week of the 2004/05 season, trade newspaper Variety reported.
Attendances also fell 7.3% to 229,047 during the week of 31 May to 6 June, according to Variety's figures.
The paper attributed much of the drop to the closure of the Bernadette Peters revival of Gypsy on 30 May.
Winners
In addition, Wicked and The Boy From Oz, starring Tony-winner Hugh Jackman, each played only seven performances.
Bombay Dreams, Chicago and Rent also saw their takings go down. One of the week's biggest box office winners was Sight Unseen.
Overall, Broadway's 21 musicals grossed $12.6m with attendance of 191,020. Tickets cost an average of $65.90.
The audience dip on Broadway comes as a number of stage productions in London's West End announced they were to close early.
Early summer is traditionally a difficult month for attracting audiences.
