A musical based around the songs of pop group UB40 will open in their home city of Birmingham next year. Twelve of the band's hits will feature in Promises And Lies, alongside new tracks written for the production.
"We wanted to do more than simply string together our hits into a throwaway plot," UB40 said.
Band members are not due to perform in the musical, with its plot set in the Midlands. UB40 appeared at Saturday's Live 8 concert in London.
'No throwaway plot'
The band collaborated with playwright Jess Walters on the musical, which is due to open at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in March 2006.
The UB40 musical will follow recent musicals based on the songs of Abba, Madness, Queen and Rod Stewart.
Band members said they had previously been approached by a number of producers about creating a UB40 musical for the West End.
"It had to have a story that reflected our view of the world," they said.
UB40 have had 37 UK hit singles in a 25-year career, including numbers ones Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe and (I Can't Help) Falling in Love With You.
