Adams had a global hit with (Everything I Do) I Do It For You

The Canadian star will play to an estimated 20,000 people at the Arabian City venue later this month.

Nearly 74,000 people were killed and 3.5 million made homeless by the South Asia earthquake on 8 October.

"This is the first time that an artist of Bryan Adam's calibre is coming to Pakistan," said concert co-organiser Salman Iqbal.

Earlier trip cancelled

Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt travelled to Pakistan to visit survivors of the earthquake in November.

Adams, who had a global hit with (Everything I Do) I Do It For You, planned to visit Pakistan five years ago but cancelled his trip after the 11 September attacks.

"We came into contact with Adams before 9/11 and he was willing to perform here but the terrorist attacks on United States and the subsequent war in Afghanistan foiled our efforts," co-organiser Ahmed Shah said.

Pakistan shares a border with Afghanistan, and violence between opposing militants from the majority Sunni and minority Shia communities has claimed hundred of lives in Pakistan in recent years.

Karachi has been the scene of numerous attacks, many against Westerners and minority Christians.

"We want to show to the world that Pakistan is a friendly country and its people love music and Karachi is no more a troubled city," Mr Iqbal added.
