Angelina Jolie spoke to people at a relief camp during her visit

Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, travelled with Pitt aboard a helicopter carrying food, blankets and plastic sheets.

The couple visited a remote village in a valley, the town of Balakot and a tented relief camp for survivors, refugee agency officials said.

The October quake left more than 73,000 people dead and millions homeless.

Jolie has travelled to more than 20 countries for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since taking up her goodwill ambassador role in August 2001.

It was her third visit to Pakistan for the UN.

Urgent work

Jolie and UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres later took part in a news conference in Islamabad.

Mr Guterres said urgent work was needed to avert further tragedy as troops battle to supply aid before the harsh Himalayan winter.

The UNHCR, which has flown tents and shelter material to help those left homeless by the disaster, warned against shifting the focus of the efforts from emergency relief to reconstruction.

Jolie and Pitt held a meeting with Pakistan's president

Jolie appealed for promised international aid to be delivered soon.

"The pledges that were made need to materialise soon, because as I'm understanding, there are so many wonderful pledges of money that could come in the next few years - but this winter is in the next few weeks," she said.

Pitt joined Jolie at the UNHCR headquarters in Geneva on Tuesday for private briefings before the couple headed to Pakistan.

They also met with Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf in Rawalpindi.
