Ken and Deirdre will be hoping for a happier second marriage

ITV said its was "still looking" at the episode but would not reveal whether there were any royal references in it.

Ken and Deirdre will be tying the knot for the second time on Friday, the first coincided with the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana in 1981.

ITV insisted the latest date clash was merely a coincidence.

It said the storyline had been planned for months before the royal announcement but had been kept a secret.

An hour-long special of Coronation Street will be shown on Friday featuring the wedding of Ken and Deirdre - played by actors William Roache and Anne Kirkbride.

Doomed romance

There will also be a dedicated documentary later in the evening looking at the romantic upheavals of the soap couple over the years.

Roache and Kirkbride are two of the longest serving actors on the Manchester-based soap.

Kirkbride joined in 1972 and over the years her character has been married three times and jailed following a doomed romance with a conman.

Roache was in the show from the beginning in 1960 and has been involved in three on-screen weddings.

The BBC has scheduling headaches of its own to deal with following the change of day of the royal wedding to avoid a clash with the Pope's funeral.

Saturday's wedding coincides with the Grand National, which traditionally garners huge ratings.
