Colombian rocker Juanes has won three Latin Grammy awards, which have been held in Spanish for the first time.

Juanes, who dominated these awards in 2003, won prizes for best rock song, music video and rock solo vocalist.

"This is a dream night," he said. "To all the fans in Colombia, I love you and thank you very much."

Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz won two awards at the Los Angeles ceremony - but fellow Spaniard Bebe, nominated in five categories, only won one prize.

The singer, whose music fuses punk and flamenco, was named best new artist but lost out in the album of the year and song of the year categories.

'More deserving'

Sanz, who won four trophies last year, picked up awards for song of the year and record of the year.

"I think that all those who were nominated deserve it more than I do, and many who weren't nominated," he said as he collected the latter prize.

"I dedicate it to all of them who inspired me to do music."

Brazilian singer-songwriter Ivan Lins won album of the year for Cantando Historias, while Italian vocalist Laura Pausini won best female pop vocalist.

The Latin Grammy awards were broadcast in Spanish after previous English language versions lost 4.3 million viewers over the past five years.

US network CBS previously aired the ceremony, which honours Spanish and Portuguese speaking musicians.

Thursday's show, however, was broadcast on Spanish-language network Univision.

The first Latin Grammy awards took place in 2000, when singers Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Enrique Iglesias had hits in both the Latin American and mainstream US charts.

Awards were presented in a total of 43 categories.
