Bonham Carter voices a ghost who comes back from the dead to claim she is married to Victor Van Dort, voiced by another Burton favourite, Johnny Depp.

The film also features the voices of Christopher Lee, Albert Finney, Joanna Lumley and Emily Watson.

It is the fourth film collaboration for Burton, 47, and Bonham Carter, 39.

On working with her Californian born partner, with whom she has a two-year-old son, the British actress said: "We're pretty free with each other.

"It would be appalling if we weren't then we just couldn't work together, but it's surprisingly simple.

"It's only if Tim cuts something I really like, like in Big Fish.

"Then I woke him up in the middle of the night and asked him why he cut my monologue. He didn't even tell me that he cut it but we got over it."

Bonham Carter said that even though she did not appear onscreen in the animated movie, voicing her character still involved plenty of work.

"You still have to act and you have to learn your lines for the part," she said.

Burton, famous for quirky movies like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice joked about working with his partner: "She's never been cast as a human. If she wants to play a human being she should work with other people."
