John Peel was renowned for championing new bands

He will sing and play piano on a cover of the Buzzcocks hit Ever Fallen in Love, alongside The Who's Roger Daltrey and Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant.

The single will be first played simultaneously across all BBC radio stations on 10 October.

It will be released on 21 November, with proceeds going to the Amnesty International charity.

Newer bands including The Futureheads, El Presidente and The Datsuns will also play, along with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks.

'Passion for music'

Sir Elton said: "It is always important to remember people who encouraged and helped you early in your career.

"The thing I loved about John was his passion for new music and his praise for things he totally believed in."

Peel, who was renowned for championing new bands, died aged 65 on 26 October while on holiday in Peru.

To mark the first anniversary of his death, 13 October has been designated John Peel Day, with concerts being performed in his name around the world.

The first opportunity to see the video for Ever Fallen in Love will be on Channel 4 the same day.

A concert in London featuring New Order will be held the previous evening.
