Destiny's Child have been named the world's best pop group at the World Music Awards, based on worldwide sales.

The trio, due to disband later this month, beat acts including UK hip hop act Gorillaz and US stars Maroon 5.

Gwen Stefani and rapper The Game were named best-selling female and male artists respectively.

Destiny's Child also performed at the ceremony at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. The group will give their farewell concert on 10 September in Vancouver.

Multiple awards

The full list of World Music Award winners will be revealed when the ceremony is broadcast in the US on 13 September.

R&B star Usher, rapper 50 Cent and pop star Mariah Carey were among several stars nominated for multiple awards.

US rock band Green Day, who took seven prizes at last week's MTV Music Video Awards, were shortlisted for best rock act, competing against Coldplay, the Killers, Three Doors Down and Irish veterans U2.

Accepting her best-selling female prize via satellite while on world tour, ex-No Doubt star Gwen Stefani said: "We've been all around the world and that's my favourite part of everything I do."

Stefani was also shortlisted in the best pop-rock artist category, alongside Eminem, Gavin DeGraw, John Mayer and Ashlee Simpson.

The awards were presented by James Denton, who plays Mike Delfino in Desperate Housewives, and Baywatch star Carmen Electra, who hosted the event in her underwear.

In the UK, BBC Two will show coverage of the awards on Sunday.

Last year's World Music Awards were dominated by Usher, who took the world's best male artist, pop male artist and R&B artist prizes.
