Matt Lucas and David Walliams' characters include Judy and Maggie |
Little Britain creators David Walliams and Matt Lucas are to be featured in the next series of The South Bank Show. They will join director Sir Peter Hall and writer Alan Bennett as subjects on the flagship ITV1 show, a spokesman for the channel confirmed.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, South Bank Show presenter Melvyn Bragg has denied the programme is "dumbing down" by focusing on the BBC ratings winner.
Walliams and Lucas are "hitting new heights of comedy", he said.
"From the very beginning The South Bank Show has done features on high-quality artists from across the spectrum," he is quoted as saying.
Tearaway schoolgirl Vicky Pollard is a viewers' favourite |
"People like John Cleese and Billy Connolly have featured and I think that Little Britain is squarely in that area.
"It is preposterous that anyone would even think that we are dumbing down."
Violin virtuoso Maxim Vengerov will also feature in the forthcoming 12-part series, to begin on ITV1 in September.
The most recent South Bank Show, broadcast on 21 August, explored the life and work of Parisian artist Sophie Calle.
