Eminem had been warned about his performance on the show |
Rapper Eminem has been criticised after a performance on BBC One's Top of the Pops on 9 April led 12 viewers to complain he was "lewd" and "offensive". The complaints about the star grabbing his crotch were upheld by the BBC.
"The performer had been asked to tone his act down after rehearsal but ignored this request during the live broadcast," a BBC statement read.
"Although his gestures were part of the rap culture, they had gone beyond what is expected," it continued.
Criticism
BBC Radio 1's Sara Cox show was also criticised for awarding a prize to a contestant who admitted urinating in a train compartment - the BBC admitted this was a mistake.
A complaint about fellow Radio 1 presenter Colin Murray was also upheld after he used a strong swear word on the Colin and Edith show last November.
There was a total of 402 complaints to the BBC from 1 April to 30 June 2004 - 154 were investigated and 27 upheld.

104 people complained about remarks made on the BBC's Asian Network's Sonia Deol show on 11 May.
They complained it contained remarks that were highly offensive to Sikhs during a discussion on inter-religious marriage.
The offending comments were made by a guest on the show, who apologised on air several times.
The presenter, Sonia Deol, also apologised and pointed out immediately that the remarks were unacceptable.
