Footage of Eminem dropping his trousers and exposing his backside will be edited out of the TV coverage of the MTV Movie Awards show. The rapper was appearing at Saturday's ceremony with his band D12 when he "mooned" to the cameras and audience.
MTV said it will edit the performance to make it more suitable for broadcast.
US networks have become sensitive to material that could be deemed offensive in the wake of the furore caused by Janet Jackson's Super Bowl flash.
Following the live broadcast, annually the biggest TV event, CBS and television regulators together received a record 200,000 viewer complaints.
MTV, which produced the half-time Super Bowl show, came in for heavy criticism.
Codpiece
Viacom, which owns both CBS and MTV, has since tightened up its rules on taste and decency, although it said it was not to blame for Janet Jackson's outrageous routine.
During Eminem's performance at the MTV Movie Awards he repeatedly groped himself while wearing a studded codpiece, before baring his backside.
He had pulled the same stunt earlier in the year at a concert in Germany.
Highlights of the movie ceremony, which saw Lord of the Rings: Return of the King pick up best film, will be screened in the US on Thursday.
