Monday's Match of the Day beat two episodes of ITV1's Coronation Street, which drew an average of 7.2 million and 5.8 million viewers.

Monday also saw the start of the BBC's Wimbledon coverage, which reflected its yearly average audience by attracting 1.8 million viewers.

In October, England's crucial game against Turkey, which won them a place in the tournament, became the most-watched programme on satellite, digital or cable.

The game attracted 4.1m viewers, who saw England advance to Euro 2004 by keeping the Turks to a goalless draw.
