Millie musical will close early
Amanda Holden
Amanda Holden earned an Olivier Award nomination for her lead role
West End musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, starring Amanda Holden, is closing early due to poor ticket sales.

It will close two months early on 26 June after eight months at London's The Shaftesbury Theatre.

Cutting It star Holden earned an Olivier Award nomination for her lead role in the show, in which she appeared with ex-EastEnders star Anita Dobson.

A touring production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, with a different cast, will begin in February next year.

Illness

Based on the 1967 Oscar-winning film, the show tells the story of Millie, a young girl from Kansas who dreams of the bright lights and glamour of New York in the 1920s.

Holden received good reviews for her stage performance, but was forced to take two weeks off in February when she was admitted to hospital with a kidney infection.

The 33-year-old actress said she now plans to take an extended break before returning to the UK to work on new TV projects.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is one of a number of West End shows to announce early closure.

Neil LaBute's The Shape of Things, starring Sienna Guillory, is to close after less than a month.

Meanwhile Rattle of a Simple Man, with Michelle Collins and Stephen Tompkinson, lasted just four weeks.

Elsewhere in the West End, the Rod Stewart musical Tonight's the Night is to end its run this autumn.
