Police had to break up a shoving match at a concert in Massachusetts after rapper 50 Cent jumped from the stage into the crowd, sparking a scuffle.

The Grammy-nominated rapper was an unannounced guest at the 1,400-capacity show in Springfield.

He leaped into the crowd with his entourage after an audience member threw water. He and his bodyguards were pushed back on stage by security.

The rapper finished the song, and then left immediately.

The rapper had been playing for 10 minutes when the incident occurred, Springfield Hippodrome co-owner Michael J Barrasso said.

Two charged

"He removed his gold chain, handed it to someone on the stage next to him and jumped off the stage into the crowd," he said.

"He finished the song, believe it or not," Mr Barrasso said. "Then the whole entourage and him just rushed for the exit, got in their cars and left."

Two men were later charged by police for disturbing the peace.

50 Cent, a protege of rapper Eminem and Dr Dre, has become one of the biggest names in hip-hop over the last 18 months. His hits include In Da Club.
