Wimbledon film tops UK box office

Romantic comedy Wimbledon has gone straight to the top of the UK box office chart, displacing Tom Cruise thriller Collateral after one week.

Set during the annual tennis tournament, Wimbledon took �1.6m in its opening weekend, according to industry tracker Screen International.

Chinese epic Hero, starring Jet Li, was a new entry in third place.

Thriller Cellular and comic book adaptation The Punisher entered in seventh and eighth place respectively.

Wimbledon actors Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany attended Wimbledon's UK premiere in London last week.

Despite falling from the top of the chart, Collateral took a further �1.4m at the weekend to take its UK box office total to �4.7m.

Animated film Garfield, based on the cartoon cat stories, celebrated its ninth week in the UK chart by bouncing back from 10th position up to number nine.

It was also the highest grossing film in the top 10, having taken �9.1m since its 30 July release.
