Julianne Moore stars as a grieving mother in The Forgotten
Supernatural thriller The Forgotten has gone straight to the top of the US box office chart, taking $22m (12m).

The film stars Julianne Moore as a mother who is told the son she lost in a plane crash never existed and she had merely created false memories of him.

British film Shaun of the Dead made its North American debut at number seven.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow dropped into second place with weekend sales of $6.7m (3.7m), according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

The Forgotten performed better than expected by film studio Sony Pictures, which predicted that it would generate $17m (9.4m) in ticket sales.

"Needless to say, it's a terrific opening for us and a terrific opening for the film's distributor, Revolution," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said.

Starring Simon Pegg, comedy horror Shaun of the Dead took $3.3m (1.8m) last weekend after becoming a UK box office hit in April.

Its US performance was impressive considering it opened in only 607 cinemas, whereas all its competitors in the top 10 opened on anywhere from 1,700 to 3,100 screens.
