Franz Ferdinand won this year's Mercury Music Prize

Mercury Music Prize winners Franz Ferdinand and Dizzee Rascal are on the 10-strong shortlist, which was whittled down from 73 artists.

The Streets have also been nominated for the Shortlist, for the second time, for A Grand Don't Come for Free.

The winner of the $10,000 (�5,563) prize will be announced on 10 November.

The remit of the Shortlist Prize is to recognise music that has achieved critical acclaim but not necessarily commercial success, providing an alternative to the Grammys.

A panel of 20 judges, called Listmakers, has been drawn from critics and musicians, including Norah Jones, Robert Smith of the Cure, Massive Attack's 3D and Jack Black.

Others who have made it through to the next stage of the Shortlist Prize include French electronic band Air, former Wu-Tang-Clan member Ghostface Killah and country star Loretta Lyn.

London-born singer Nellie McKay, who was brought up in Harlem, Las Vegas-based band The Killers, and rockers TV on the Radio and Wilco are also in contention for the main prize.

The award was created in 2001 to represent "left-of-centre" emerging talent.

Unlike the Mercury Music Prize, which honours British talent, the Shortlist Prize does not exclude other countries from its nominations.
