British music up for US prize
PJ Harvey
PJ Harvey is from England's West Country
Singer-songwriter PJ Harvey and Damon Albarn's virtual group Gorillaz have been nominated for the US equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize.

They are in the 10-strong list for the inaugural Shortlist Prize For Artistic Achievement.

The nominees were chosen by US music industry figures to highlight critically-acclaimed acts, rather than big sellers.

The judges for the prize, sponsored by Virgin Megastores, include Beck, Macy Gray, Foo Fighters and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, and Trent Reznor from the Nine Inch Nails.

Harvey has been included for her Mercury-winning album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea.

Gorillaz are nominated for their self-titled debut album.

To qualify for nominations, the albums must not have sold more than 500,000 copies in the US.

Eclectic list

The $10,000 (6,000) prizewinner will be announced on 30 October.

In an eclectic list, other nominees include the French band Air for the album 10,000Hz Legend and Iceland's Sigur Ros for their release Agaetis Byrjun.

US nominations include the acts Ryan Adams for the album Heartbreaker and The Dandy Warhols, for Thirteen Tales Of Urban Bohemia.

Ms Harvey formed her trio in Somerset in 1991, and released a debut single, Dress, later that year.

Her 1992 debut album Dry was widely-acclaimed, not just in the UK but in the US where it earned places in album of the year charts from New York Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone.

Her Mercury Prize-winning album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea was her seventh.

Gorillaz' hit album was withdrawn from Mercury Prize consideration after the group claimed the award would be an "albatross."
