The singer-songwriters first met at school

The gig in front of the Colosseum was attended by 100,000 more people than a free Paul McCartney concert last year.

During the 1960s Simon and Garfunkel had success with hits such as The Sound of Silence but they split in 1970.

After their 1981 reunion, they did not play together again until 1993 for a series of gigs in New York, and then performed at the Grammy Awards in 2003.

Old Friends

Saturday's concert in Rome marked the end of the European leg of their Old Friends tour.

The European part of their tour kicked off in Manchester on 14 July.

As well as the UK and Italy, they played gigs in France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and The Netherlands.

Before the European dates, they peformed shows in 19 cities across the United States.

Simon and Garfunkel met as children in the New York borough of Queens and released their first record in the 1950s under the name of Tom and Jerry.

Some of their most famous songs include Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mrs Robinson and Scarborough Fair.
