Scarlett author Ripley dies at 70
Alexandra Ripley
Ripley wrote several historical novels
US author Alexandra Ripley, best known for Scarlett, sequel to Gone with the Wind, has died aged 70.

Ripley died of natural causes at her home in Richmond, Virginia, her daughter Elizabeth said.

She had been picked to write the sequel by the estate of Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell.

The 1991 novel was met by lacklustre reviews, but was a best-seller in the US. Ripley wrote a string of other historical novels including Charleston.

Later works included On Leaving Charleston, The Time Returns and A Love Divine.

Ripley, who was separated from her partner, is survived by two daughters and a granddaughter.
