Jack White's White Stripes are nominated for three Grammys

He was ordered to stand trial on 9 March. Mr White faces a maximum of a year in prison and a $1,000 (�561) fine if he is convicted.

Mr White, 28, is accused of beating Jason Stollsteimer of the Von Bondies band in a Detroit club on 13 December.

Mr Stollsteimer, 25, was treated for facial injuries. Mr White told police afterwards he acted in self-defence.

Mr Stollsteimer told police the White Stripes frontman had punched him seven times in the face. Police said he was left with a swollen and bruised eye and a bleeding nose after the alleged assault.

Both men were in the audience of the Majestic Theater Center in Detroit watching another band when the incident is reported to have happened.

The White Stripes, the rock duo which also includes drummer Meg White, have become one of the most popular new bands of recent times.

The band released their fourth album Elephant last year and are nominated for three Grammy Awards.

They are up for album of the year and alternative music album for Elephant, and best rock performance by a duo or group with vocal for the single Seven Nation Army.

The White Stripes also have two nominations in the UK's Brit Awards.
