The White Stripes lead singer Jack White pleaded innocent on Wednesday to a charge of aggravated assault. He was ordered to stand trial on 9 March. Mr White faces a maximum of a year in prison and a $1,000 (561) fine if he is convicted.
Mr White, 28, is accused of beating Jason Stollsteimer of the Von Bondies band in a Detroit club on 13 December.
Mr Stollsteimer, 25, was treated for facial injuries. Mr White told police afterwards he acted in self-defence.
Mr Stollsteimer told police the White Stripes frontman had punched him seven times in the face. Police said he was left with a swollen and bruised eye and a bleeding nose after the alleged assault.
Both men were in the audience of the Majestic Theater Center in Detroit watching another band when the incident is reported to have happened.
