Actor Ford is granted a divorce

Actor Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison have been granted a divorce after 18 years of marriage.

The Raiders of the Lost Ark star's divorce from screenwriter Mathison became final on Tuesday.

The couple, who met on the set of 1979 film Apocalypse Now, applied for a separation in August 2001.

Details of the Los Angeles Superior Court settlement were not revealed, but Mathison had applied for custody of their teenage son and daughter.

Since his separation Ford has been seeing actress Calista Flockhart.

Ford, 61, is best known for his quiet tough-guy film persona and has made 35 movies, 10 of which have ticket sales of more than $100m at the box office.

His movies Star Wars, its sequels The Return of the Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back and the Indiana Jones film Raiders of the Lost Ark are four of the top 20 top grossing movies in Hollywood history.

He will star in a new Indiana Jones sequel, which is expected to hit screens in 2005, and will again be directed by Steven Spielberg.
