She added that the actor was with Mathison and the children - Malcom, 14, and Georgia, 11 - in Los Angeles.

Ford, 59, has starred in a number of hit blockbuster movies, including Star Wars and the Indiana Jones films.

When he and Mathison first announced they were living apart last year, they said they were working towards resolving their problems.

At the time, Ford was being linked to US actress Lara Flynn Boyle - star of ABC's hit legal drama The Practice - by the tabloid magazine, the National Enquirer.

But his spokeswoman stressed: "It had nothing to do with that. They separated before."

Ford also has two adult sons, Ben and Willard, from his first marriage to Mary Marquardt, whom he divorced in 1979.

Ford shot to fame in the early 80s playing Hans Solo in the Star Wars movies. The Indiana Jones action adventures confirmed his status as one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

He has worked almost consistently throughout the 80s and 90s, in dramas such as Frantic, Clear and Present Danger. His most recent hit was the thriller What Lies Beneath.

Ford's marriage breakdown follows other much publicised Hollywood divorces, including those of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman and Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan.
