The comedian based his private plane at the airport |
An airport in California has been renamed Bob Hope Airport in honour of the late comedian. Hope's relatives and friends, including his wife Dolores, attended the renaming ceremony at Burbank- Glendale-Pasadena Airport in Los Angeles.
Hope, who died in July aged 100, had parked his private plane at the airport since 1985.
The ceremony coincided with the centenary of the world's first powered human flight by the Wright Brothers.
Other figures who took part in the ceremony included comedienne Phyllis Diller and hope's daughter Linda.
"He was in the air most of the time... on the air, in the air, one way or the other it was his thing and this was his airport," Diller told reporters.
"Everything about him was around Burbank. He lived here, he worked here and he flew here," she said.
A fleet of World War 2-era airplanes flew past during the ceremony.
Birthday honours
Hope died at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, just weeks after celebrating his centenary.
Before his death, he was honoured with the naming of Bob Hope Square in central Hollywood.
The new Bon Hope airport is one of only a small number named after celebrities.
California already has a John Wayne in Orange County, south of Los Angeles, while a Washington airstrip was renamed after former president and Hollywood actor Ronald Reagan.
