Comic Billy Connolly picks up his CBE from Buckingham Palace

The 61-year-old, dressed in traditional top hat and tails for the ceremony, said the honour would not change him.

"Absolutely not. Not a single sausage. This will be behind a wee window with all the other mementoes," he declared.

Connolly, who starred alongside Dame Judi Dench in the film Mrs Brown, joked that Prince Charles was "wearing his mother's dress" in the Queen's absence.

The comic, affectionately known as the "Big Yin", said the Prince of Wales had commented on his smart dress when it was his turn to receive his honour.

"Usually when he sees me I've got me breeks on or I'm in a kilt," said Connolly.

"I normally look like an unemployed window cleaner," added the comic after the ceremony.

The Glaswegian said that he had been glad to "be picked out of the merry throng" to be awarded the CBE for services to entertainment.

He added that the occasion had been a "doddle", although was rather "weird".

Connolly, who has a reputation for using blue language during his many stand-up comedy routines, insisted it was generally unfounded.

"I don't generally charge around being dirty. I've never seen myself as dirty," said the veteran star.

The comic-turned-actor now spends most of his time in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife Pamela Stephenson.
