Campbell allegedly assaulted a police officer during his arrest |
Country singer Glen Campbell has blamed his recent drink-driving arrest on accidentally drinking alcohol while on prescribed medication for anxiety. He was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, on Monday after allegedly crashing his car and then driving off.
Campbell, 67, who sang Rhinestone Cowboy, has been released on bail.
"I'm taking Lexapro and you can't have alcohol with it, and I did. I forgot." the United States star told the East Valley Tribune newspaper.
He said he had been taking the medication for at least seven months to treat anxiety.
When tested, his blood-alcohol level was two-and-a-half times above the legal limit for Arizona, according to court documents.
Valuable lesson
And while at Phoenix's Madison Street Jail, Mr Campbell assaulted a police officer and held on suspicion of aggravated assault, a police spokesman.
He was released after posting bail of $2,000 (1,165).
The singer has since issued a public apology, saying he had "learned a valuable lesson".
In a recent interview, Mr Campbell said he gave up drugs and alcohol in the late 1970s after taking cocaine in Las Vegas and almost killing himself.
